Even by the standards of Silvio Berlusconi’s colourful life, it was a pretty extraordinary vignette.
As I was walking towards Milan’s cathedral on Wednesday to cover the former prime minister’s funeral, I heard of a rather unusual tribute that had been paid to him.
At his mansion in Arcore, about 20 miles north of Milan, a bouquet of flowers had been left by an outfit called Escort Advisor, which reviews escort girls.
A note attached to the bouquet, bearing the company’s logo – a pair of breasts – said simply: “Ciao Silvio.”
The bouquet and note were hastily removed when aides realised with quiet horror who had sent them.
In a statement released later, the company said it was saddened but not surprised that its bouquet had been binned.
“All this indignation simply confirms the hypocrisy that surrounds the sex industry as well as the figure of Berlusconi,” it said.
The company had wanted to pay tribute to the fact that the media baron had “normalised” society’s views of escort girls, given that he had been such an avid customer himself. “
